Learning objective

Identify the cloud components and explain why forward plotting is not future information.

Ichimoku combines midpoint-based lines and a cloud. Common settings are 9, 26 and 52 periods. The conversion and base lines use midpoints of selected high-low ranges, rather than simple averages of every closing price. Check the settings before comparing charts from different platforms.

Leading Span A averages the conversion and base lines; Leading Span B uses a longer range midpoint. They are displayed forward to form the cloud. The lagging span (Chikou) plots the current bar's closing price backward, conventionally by 26 periods; it is not the closing price from 26 periods ago. The current close is final only when that bar closes. A value drawn at an earlier chart position was not available at that earlier time. These offsets do not provide future prices.

Price above, inside or below the cloud offers a way to describe trend context and congestion. Crosses and cloud changes need precise timing rules. If a chart looks clear retrospectively, verify which values and offsets were available at the decision moment rather than reading the finished chart backwards.

Worked example

Hypothetically, a nine-period high of 110 and low of 100 yield conversion line 105. A 26-period high of 116 and low of 98 yield base line 107. Span A is 106, displayed with the configured forward offset; it does not forecast a future price of 106.

Common mistakes

Do not mistake displacement for prediction or use a later completed cloud to validate an earlier entry. All components transform observed prices and can lag a changing market.

Practice

Draw a timeline separating calculation time from display time. Mark one invented cloud value and explain when it first becomes available to a research rule.

Check your understanding: Does a forward-plotted cloud contain future market observations?
