Currency relationships

Relative strength, shared exposures and measured historical correlations.

Understanding direction

For matched instruments and timestamps, EUR/JPY ≈ EUR/USD × USD/JPY and EUR/GBP ≈ EUR/USD ÷ GBP/USD. Quotes differ with bid/ask spreads and venue. These identities explain ratios; they do not create a guaranteed executable arbitrage. Pearson r ranges from −1 to +1, is computed here on log returns and is sensitive to timeframe, sample and regimes. A high historical r is not a future forecast.

Currency relationshipsUnderstanding directionInstrument overview
EUR/USD ↑ · USD/JPY ↔EUR/JPY ↑If USD/JPY is unchanged, a higher EUR/USD implies a higher EUR/JPY by the cross-rate identity.
EUR/USD ↑ · GBP/USD ↑EUR/GBP ?Both can rise while EUR/GBP rises, falls or stays flat; compare the relative percentage changes.
USD/JPY ↑ · USD/CHF ↑JPY/CHF ?A shared USD move does not determine JPY/CHF. This ratio also depends on the relative change of JPY and CHF.
Gold · USDVariableDollar pricing can matter for gold, but real yields and risk demand can change the observed relationship.

Relative-movement scenario

Choose hypothetical changes against the same reference basket. Pair change = (1 + base change) / (1 + quote change) − 1. This is an algebraic scenario, not a market forecast.
