A wave-2 end at 103 passes the wave-1 start boundary; 99 fails it. Passing one rule does not validate a full wave count.
Learning objective
Understand basic wave labels and why alternative counts remain possible.
The framework commonly describes a five-wave impulse in the main direction followed by a three-wave correction. Wave labels are a model imposed on price swings, not directly measured physical forces. Larger and smaller structures can be nested, so state the degree and timeframe before interpreting a count.
Standard impulse rules include wave 2 not retracing beyond the start of wave 1 and wave 3 not being the shortest of waves 1, 3 and 5. In a standard impulse wave 4 does not overlap wave 1 territory; diagonal structures have different conventions. Distinguish rules from descriptive guidelines.
Different analysts can fit different valid counts to the same incomplete history. Record a primary count, a plausible alternative and the price that would invalidate each before viewing later candles. Repeated retrospective relabelling can protect a story from every failure while providing no testable forecasting value.
Worked example
Hypothetical wave 1 starts at 100 and ends at 110. A proposed wave 2 ending at 103 passes the start-boundary rule; one ending at 99 fails the standard impulse definition. Passing one rule alone does not validate the complete count.
Common mistakes
Do not use wave names as certainty or keep changing degree to avoid invalidation. Fibonacci proportions are optional references, not guaranteed exact wave lengths.
Practice
Sketch a five-wave candidate and list its rule checks. Add an alternative correction count and one invalidation level for each; preserve both when evaluating future candles.
