Learning objective

Distinguish a multi-session holding style from a complete tested strategy.

Swing trading attempts to study moves over multiple sessions, often using higher-timeframe structure. The holding style does not determine a profitable entry. A complete method still needs a defined market, observation interval, trigger, invalidation, exit and rules for when the hypothesis is not eligible.

Holding across daily financing points or weekends introduces costs and gap exposure that an intraday example may omit. Check the actual product, contract, funding schedule and calendar. A normal stop cannot guarantee execution at the requested level if the market reopens beyond it.

Portfolio exposure matters when several positions share a currency or macroeconomic driver. Fewer trades do not necessarily mean less risk. For a study, document whether upcoming events permit holding, how competing setups are selected and when the position is reviewed without changing its original loss budget.

Worked example

Hypothetical long entry is 100 and planned stop is 96, a distance of 4. The next tradable quote after a gap is 93. An execution near 93 would imply a seven-unit price loss rather than four, before fees; this is an illustration, not an execution guarantee.

Common mistakes

Do not treat a daily chart as protection against gaps or ignore financing when comparing gross outcomes. Trend indicators still react to historical data, and longer holding cannot guarantee a better result.

Practice

Write a practice swing checklist covering an ordinary night, a weekend and a scheduled announcement. Identify which costs and execution assumptions differ for each holding period.

Check your understanding: Does a normal stop at 96 guarantee exit at 96 after a gap?
