Instrument overview
The New Zealand dollar is New Zealand’s floating currency. The Reserve Bank does not maintain a specific exchange-rate level; a familiar historical range is therefore not an official floor or ceiling.
Reserve Bank of New Zealand
Monetary-policy framework
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand uses monetary policy to target inflation over the medium term. It also describes circumstances for foreign-exchange intervention, so floating should not be interpreted as a commitment never to intervene.
What to monitor
Study domestic inflation, employment and policy expectations together with agricultural-export and regional-growth scenarios. Improving export prices could support income expectations, yet a change in foreign yields may dominate the pair. Ask what information was already priced before the release.
Currency relationships
NZD/USD rises if NZD strengthens relative to USD. AUD/NZD falls if NZD strengthens relative to AUD. Similar regional narratives do not make AUD and NZD identical: divergent policy surprises can move their cross even when both rise against the dollar.
Risks & practical checks
Do not transfer an AUD strategy to NZD without checking spreads, contract size and observed behaviour. A narrow recent range can break during policy or global news. Use a scenario loss calculation and avoid counting several related commodity-currency trades as independent diversification.
