Instrument overview
The Mexican peso is Mexico’s currency. Its floating exchange-rate framework means USD/MXN reflects changing supply and demand rather than a permanently fixed dollar conversion rate. Distinguish the currency from peso-denominated asset prices.
Banco de México
Monetary-policy framework
Banco de México’s monetary framework uses inflation targeting with a floating currency. Its policy path can differ from the Federal Reserve’s; analyse relative expectations and the reason for a decision rather than assuming a mechanical one-for-one response to US rates.
What to monitor
Study inflation, domestic activity and US trade-demand scenarios together with financing conditions. A trade-policy shock could change growth expectations even when domestic interest rates are unchanged. Compare favourable carry assumptions with the possible spot loss under an adverse global-risk scenario.
Currency relationships
A strengthening MXN against USD lowers USD/MXN. US growth news may affect both sides, so better US data does not give a universal pair direction. Correlation with other higher-yield currencies can change when a Mexico-specific event dominates; do not assume identical hedging behaviour.
Risks & practical checks
Carry trades remain exposed to abrupt currency losses. Confirm actual rollover, contract size and spreads with the provider, including event periods. Sum exposure across related positions and test performance after costs; an attractive nominal yield does not validate a leverage level or eliminate drawdown risk.
