Instrument overview
The won is South Korea’s currency. The Bank of Korea describes a free-floating exchange-rate regime, with market forces determining the rate in principle. Historical basket arrangements should not be confused with the present framework.
Bank of Korea
Monetary-policy framework
The Bank of Korea notes that excessive exchange-rate volatility can affect financial stability and inflation. Floating therefore does not make currency conditions irrelevant to policy. Distinguish the bank’s policy principles from market speculation about a particular defended price level.
What to monitor
Study inflation, domestic activity and policy alongside semiconductor-cycle, trade-demand and dollar-funding scenarios. Stronger export demand might improve expectations, while global portfolio selling could offset it. Avoid substituting a technology-stock headline for a complete two-currency analysis or for chart confirmation.
Currency relationships
KRW strengthening against USD lowers USD/KRW. Regional currencies can share global-dollar or China-related influences without moving identically. Differences in export exposure, local policy and funding mean that a yen or Taiwan-dollar position is not automatically an exact hedge for won exposure.
Risks & practical checks
Confirm whether your quote represents onshore spot, an offshore derivative or a broker-specific product. Reference rates are not executable promises. Check settlement conventions, trading hours and liquidity before sizing, and plan for unexpected trade or policy news rather than extrapolating a recent low-volatility period.
