Instrument overview

The yen is Japan’s currency. Many familiar pairs quote yen as the second currency, which reverses the visual meaning of yen strength: a falling USD/JPY can mean a stronger yen.

Bank of Japan

Monetary-policy framework

The Bank of Japan conducts monetary policy with price stability as its objective. Study its outlook and communication without assuming that policies used in an earlier decade still describe the current framework.

What to monitor

Compare Japanese inflation, wages and activity with foreign interest-rate expectations. In a study scenario, narrowing expected yield differences could change the appeal of borrowing yen to fund another asset; that mechanism needs confirmation rather than a preset trading direction.

Currency relationships

If JPY strengthens relative to both USD and EUR, both USD/JPY and EUR/JPY fall. They need not fall equally because USD and EUR can also diverge. Carry-trade unwinding is a possible scenario, not a guarantee that yen always rises when equities fall.

Risks & practical checks

Abrupt repricing of funding trades or policy expectations can cause fast moves. Intervention-related headlines should be checked against official statements rather than rumours. Size yen-cross positions using actual contract specifications and an adverse-move scenario, including possible slippage during thin liquidity.
