Instrument overview
The Hong Kong dollar is Hong Kong’s currency. It operates under the Linked Exchange Rate System, so analysis begins with the currency-board structure rather than a freely floating major-currency model.
Hong Kong Monetary Authority
Monetary-policy framework
HKMA’s currency-board framework links HKD to USD, supported by dollar assets and convertibility undertakings to banks. The link concerns USD; other HKD crosses still change with global currency values. Bank-level undertakings are not promises of retail execution at a chosen rate.
What to monitor
Study Hong Kong funding conditions, capital flows and US monetary-policy transmission. A local liquidity change may alter money-market conditions without implying a new floating-currency trend. Use the official explanation of the adjustment mechanism before treating a small exchange-rate move as a breakout.
Currency relationships
Given the USD link, EUR/HKD is strongly shaped by EUR/USD, but spreads and timing still matter. A stable USD/HKD does not mean HKD is stable against JPY, EUR or every trade-weighted basket. Do not treat the dollar anchor as a general correlation with mainland Chinese equity prices.
Risks & practical checks
Small spot movement may leave financing charges and spreads as dominant costs. Verify broker terms and never label a linked-currency trade risk-free. Claims of a policy change need official confirmation; assess execution risk separately from the structural commitment maintained by the monetary authority.
