Instrument overview

The Canadian dollar is Canada’s currency. Canada combines an inflation-control framework with a flexible exchange rate; USD/CAD should therefore be read as a comparison between Canadian and US conditions.

Bank of Canada

Monetary-policy framework

The Bank of Canada conducts monetary policy around its inflation-control target. A flexible currency allows domestic policy to differ from foreign policy, although foreign developments still affect the Canadian outlook and exchange rate.

What to monitor

Compare inflation, labour-market releases and policy expectations with US demand and energy-price scenarios. Higher oil prices could improve export-income expectations while raising inflation elsewhere; the net effect depends on what changes in relative growth, rates and risk pricing.

Currency relationships

If CAD strengthens relative to USD, USD/CAD falls. CAD/JPY may instead rise when CAD strengthens against JPY. Oil and USD/CAD need not move inversely on every day: dollar-specific shocks or changing policy expectations can override the export-income channel.

Risks & practical checks

Treat an oil correlation as a hypothesis to measure, not a standing trade instruction. Joint Canadian and US releases can create conflicting surprises. Check the aggregate risk of CAD positions and distinguish a commodity scenario from the actual price confirmation required by your strategy.
