Start with the regime
Gold is not driven by one permanent correlation. Begin by asking whether markets are repricing real yields, dollar liquidity, inflation confidence or geopolitical insurance.
When real yields and the dollar move together, gold often faces a clearer macro impulse. When they diverge, position adjustment and safe-haven demand deserve more attention.
Build a two-timeframe map
Use the daily chart to define trend and major acceptance zones, then the four-hour or one-hour chart to locate session structure. Mark previous-day and previous-week extremes before the London–New York overlap.
A level is not a forecast. Treat it as a location where the quality of acceptance, rejection and participation can be evaluated.
Control event risk
CPI, labour data and central-bank decisions can widen spreads and sweep both sides of a range. Position size and invalidation matter more than precision of entry during these windows.

Separate the measures
A nominal yield is quoted before adjusting for inflation. A real yield accounts for inflation; a traded inflation-linked bond yield is one observable proxy, rather than a direct reading of every investor’s expectations. The US ten-year inflation-indexed Treasury series (DFII10) on FRED provides a consistent daily reference. Record the observation date: a daily economic series is not a live tick feed.
The difference between comparable nominal and inflation-linked yields is a breakeven rate. It also reflects market pricing and liquidity, so do not treat it as a certain forecast of inflation. Compare like maturities and observation dates before drawing a conclusion.
A worked scenario, not a price forecast
Suppose, purely for illustration, a real-yield reference rises from 1.8% to 2.0% while the dollar strengthens. The change is 0.2 percentage points, or 20 basis points. A research hypothesis is that the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold has increased. That hypothesis still needs to be checked against the gold price and other demand factors.
Write the alternative before looking for confirmation: gold could remain firm despite those moves. That would weaken a simple rates-only explanation and prompt investigation of other flows. None of these hypothetical observations specifies an entry, target or expected return.
Keep an observation log
Use four columns: date and session; real-yield and dollar observations; gold response; alternative explanation. Distinguish what you observed from what you inferred. Compare the same time window and note whether a holiday, delayed feed or revised release affects the comparison. A single session is not enough to establish a stable correlation.
