Continuous does not mean constant

Bitcoin trades 24/7, but depth, spreads and participant mix change through the week. Weekend moves may occur with thinner institutional liquidity.

Observe spot and derivatives together

Spot demand, ETF flows, funding, basis and open interest help distinguish accumulation from leveraged chasing. Elevated leverage can accelerate both breakouts and liquidations.

Define venue risk

Price feeds, custody arrangements and counterparty exposure vary. A chart cannot capture every operational risk attached to digital assets.

For the standards behind this work, read the research methodology and editorial policy.

Separate the network from the trading venue

Bitcoin’s network, an exchange order book and an investment fund are different systems. The Bitcoin project’s introductory risk guidance explains price volatility, wallet responsibility and the irreversibility of transactions. It does not guarantee liquidity at an exchange or the solvency of a custodian. A quoted market price is not evidence that funds can be withdrawn on demand.

Before comparing prices, record whether each feed represents spot trading, a derivative or a fund share. Identify the venue, quote currency, timestamp and contract terms. A price difference can reflect different instruments, fees or trading conditions rather than a simple opportunity that can be captured without risk.

A hypothetical liquidity example

Imagine two order books showing the same best offer of 100. One has only one unit available at that price; the other has twenty. Buying ten units could have very different execution results even though the displayed headline price is identical. This example uses invented units and prices to distinguish the best quote from the depth behind it.

For weekend research, observe available depth and spreads rather than assuming that the clock alone proves thin liquidity. Record outages and venue-specific trading arrangements. A move that begins when another reference market is closed cannot be compared fairly with a stale quote from that closed market.

Treat flow observations as dated evidence

If discussing a fund flow, name the fund or published dataset, its measurement period and publication date. Separate creations or redemptions from exchange trading volume and from a price change. Avoid attaching a current interpretation to an old daily total. This page contains no live fund-flow dataset and makes no claim about today’s net buying or selling.

Finish a research note with the evidence that would challenge your explanation. For example, a price move may reverse while your chosen flow measure stays unchanged. Recording that disagreement is more useful than treating every later move as confirmation.
